If you want to go on a scenic adventure to the north of Thailand, look no further than taking a train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai.
Why Chiang Mai you may ask? Chiang Mai is the biggest city in Northern Thailand full of awesome things to see and do. It is also a hub for all kinds of transport connections with an international airport.
In this article, we are going to introduce you to a fun and adventurous way to travel to Chiang Mai which is by train!
Departing Station:
• Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal Station (Bang Sue Grand Station) Station
Getting there: You can take a taxi there as well or take the underground train (MRT) to Bang Sue Station.
The Uttravithi Train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai takes around 13 hours and vice versa with a journey of around 460 miles (~740 km.)
The Uttravithi Train offers first and second classes, both have upper and lower berths.

Note that the luggage size has to be no larger than 50x50x50 cm. Otherwise, you will need to pay for the extra weight.
You can find train routes and timetables for all destinations in Thailand, including Bangkok to Chiang Mai and vice versa here. There are also other regular trains but for the Uttravithi Train, look for train no. 9.
The fares vary depending on the distance and station you depart from.
If you depart from Bangkok, the fares start from 704 – 1,806 Thai Baht with the highest price being a private room on the train in first class.
